*poem by the best of the best: Mary Oliver, from her collection Dog Songs. My sweet pup Diego is hardly little, but when he’s sleeping, and sometimes when he’s curled up on the rug, he does look like he’s a more manageable size (right?), at least to my loving eyes. He does sleep a lot, which is good, right? Hell yes it is. LOL.

He puts his cheek against mine
and makes small, expressive sounds.
And when I’m awake, or awake enough

he turns upside down, his four paws
in the air
and his eyes dark and fervent.

“Tell me you love me,” he says.

“Tell me again.”

Could there be a sweeter arrangement? Over and over
he gets to ask.
I get to tell.
